Patient and Family Care

Patient and Family Centered Care

The health care paradigm has changed over the past decade -- patients and families are now considered an integral part of the health system, and hospital care is being modified to take into account the needs of these stakeholders.

After her heart recovered, Risa decided that she needed to show gratitude to those who saved her life and to those who supported her through her illness. She began volunteering as a patient and family advisor for the Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan. In her role, she provided feedback focused on healthcare experiences from the perspective of those receiving care, and she promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion at Michigan Medicine. She stressed the importance of enabling family members to be close to their loved ones, while also reminding staff to advocate for those who are not so fortunate to have relatives or friends by their side.

Risa went on to represent patients on the executive committee and the National Advisory Board of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. She discussed her role as a patient and family advisor at an international conference on Patient and Family Centered Care in Baltimore in June 2018.
